GSWH Project : Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation & Strengthening Initiative – phase II

The “Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative” project, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment

Programme (UNEP) aims at accelerating global commercialization and sustainable market transformation of solar water heating

systems,thereby reducing the current use of electricity and fossil fuels for hot water preparation in residential, private service sector and public

buildings and, when applicable, industrial applications.

The activities within the second phase of the project include:

Market Assessment Report II: update of the previous Market Assessment Report. This report includes a new country-by-country analysis looking at the solar industry structure, information on certification and testing systems, etc.

Solar Thermal Action Plan for investment promotion in the Mediterranean: The action plan – covers the South and South East Mediterranean Countries - gives an overview of the status of solar heating and cooling (SHC) technology and its applications, potential benefits, critical factors for a wide market penetration, and recommendations to policy makers to take concrete steps to put in place and or realize national plans for investments in SWH systems.

GSWH Project : Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation & Strengthening Initiative
The “Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative” project, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) aims at accelerating global commercialization and sustainable market transformation of solar water heating systems, thereby reducing the current use of electricity and fossil fuels for hot water preparation in residential, private service sector and public buildings and, when applicable, industrial applications.
The activities within the first phase of the project include:

  • Market Assessment Report (D1.1): mapping of the current situation regarding the penetration rate of solar thermal technology, and collecting relevant information with respect to the following aspects: i) the country needs, ii) the existing gaps, and iii) priorities for actions.
  • Technical Study Report (D2.1): Review of state of the art of solar heat for industrial processes (SHIP) technology in the region. The study will cover the most innovative installations of the Mediterranean/ North Africa countries and will highlight the key lessons learnt in the development of the Solar Water Heating sector. The geographical focus will cover the South and East of the Mediterranean region.

MED-CSD Project : Combined Solar Power and Desalination Plant: Techno-Economic Potential in Mediterranean Partner Countries
MED-CSD is a 2-year project (2008-2010) funded by the European Union DG-Research as part of their Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) for research and technological development.
MED-CSD project aimed at:

  1. Making a technology review and a selection of concentrated solar power and desalination configurations to implement in the Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs)
  2. Carrying out feasibility studies of power plants combining Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technology with seawater desalination in the Mediterranean region
  3. Assessing the techno-economic potential of this type of combined generation in the region
  4. Elaborating an Action Plan, with a set of recommendations and adapted strategies
  5. Disseminating the results through a high-level final conference

MEDRES Project : Cost-effective Renewable Energy for Rural Areas in the Mediterranean region
MEDRES is a 3-year project funded by the European Commission (DG Research) as part of their Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
The MEDRES project aimed at:

  1. Assessing the opportunities for cost-effective renewable energy systems in rural areas and villages
  2. Analyzing end-users acceptability of new technologies
  3. Measuring the impact of electrification on socio-economic development
  4. Elaborating a set of recommendations and adapted strategies
  5. Disseminating the results through a high-level final conference

REMAP
A 2 years project funded by the European Commission (DG Research) as part of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
The REMAP project aimed at:

  1. Identifying and prioritizing potential sites for Wind Power and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects in Algeria, Jordan, Tunisia and Turkey. These projects have been identified after consultation with national stakeholders of the renewable energy sector ;
  2. Compiling a Solar and Wind energy resource atlas for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean area.
  3. Establishing a dialogue with the main stakeholders (ministries, energy agencies, utilities, energy producers, banks...) by the organization of national workshops, in order to agree on the priorities and the needs towards Wind Power and Concentrated Solar Power in each country ;
  4. Proposing adapted financing schemes for the identified projects ;
  5. Elaborating an action plan implementation ;
  6. Disseminating the results.

MEDREP: Renewable energy in North Africa, August 2005
RENEWABLE REPORTS


The work presented in these documents, carried out by the OME experts refers to the regional and country basis situation and outlook of renewable energy in the North African countries. The report has been prepared in the framework of the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Programme (MEDREP) and the OME Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development Committee.

MEDREP is a Type II Initiative launched by Italy in Johannesburg in 2002, promoting a broad partnership and cooperation among Governments, International Institutions and stakeholders with historical trade, cultural and social links, represents a successful tool to foster the Renewable Energy penetration in the energy markets of the Region.

PROJECT PORTFOLIO

The report presents pilot projects that have been identified in the framework of the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Programme (MEDREP), by MEDREC (Mediterranean Renewable Energy Centre) experts with support of OME experts. The projects are based on national priorities and represent a catalogue of best practices to be implemented and replicated in the Northern African Region.

They range from the implementation of financial mechanism aimed at reducing investor uncertainties and helping customers access to Renewable Energy equipments and installations for electricity or heat production. They are aimed at delivering electricity to rural isolated population; integrating the Renewable Energy on the national electricity grids with the objective of reaching grid stabilisation and meeting supply-demand balance; Renewable Energy integration in the building and urban sectors, in coherence with the energy efficiency policy; sea and brackish water desalination, increasing drinking water supply and water availability for irrigation; water treatment and sanitation; dissemination of cooling systems for food conservation in farms and fisheries.
