Investment Needs and Financing of Infrastructure Committee meeting

On 14 June 2022, the OME organised its Investment Needs and Financing of Infrastructure Committee meeting. Kindly hosted by Edison in Rome, the meeting discussed the road-map of the committee. In a very particular moment for the energy sector in the region, a side event in the afternoon of the 13 June was also organised to discuss the energy situation in Europe and the Mediterranean in the light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and with the purpose to feed the discussions of the committee meeting.

At a time when recent developments in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict contribute to heightened international tensions and uncertainty, with direct repercussions at the energy level, that could translate into major opportunities for the Mediterranean region to face future energy challenges. The Mediterranean area has untapped potential not only with reference to traditional energies, mainly natural gas, but also regarding the development of more innovative technologies that allow the exploitation of renewable sources, abundant in the region, inter alia with a view to hydrogen production.

In this context, the objective of the Committee is to strengthen energy cooperation to lay the foundations for the energy transition and security considering infrastructure investments and innovative financing mechanisms to implement new projects and foster the deployment of more efficient and sustainable technologies in a short and certain time frame.
