OME at the MEDCOP CLIMATE 2016 in Tangier

In perspective of the 22nd Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) to be held in November 2016 in Marrakech, the region of Tangier-Tetouan, Al Hoceima successfully hosted on July 18th and 19th in Tangier the second edition of MedCOP, called MEDCOP Climate 2016. The event gathered more than 2,000 participants.

An OME Delegation led by Bruno Lescoeur, OME Chairman, attended the event. In addition to several bilateral meetings with OME partners and several organizations, Bruno Lescoeur represented OME at two major events:

  • on 18 July at the side event organized by MASEN on “Renewable electricity exchange between Morocco and Europe: Challenges and issues” during which Mr. Lescoeur conveyed the point of view of the energy industry on the challenges that may face renewable electricity exchanges in the Mediterranean but also opportunities. Speakers were also Mustapha Bakkoury, CEO Masen, Fathallah Sijilmassi, Secretary General UfM Secretariat and Mourad Ezzine, Director Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI).
  • On 19 July at the Major Event 5 on Energy Transition. At this event, Bruno Lescoeur presented the OME energy prospects and the OME/MEDENER energy transition scenario, highlighting the challenges and opportunities the Mediterranean region is expected to face in order to address the energy needed to fuel its socio-economic development in a sustainable  and role of the energy industry and of OME (presentation). Speakers were also Amrane Obeid, Director Masen, Ezzine Mourad , Director CMI, Said Mouline, Director ADEREE, Kacem Arous, Deputy Director General, STEG, Jorge Borrejo, Deputy Secretary General UfMs and Sameh Mobarek , Advisor at the World Bank.

The future Medcop editions will take place in Palermo – Sicily (2017) and Sousse – Tunisia (2018).

MEDCOP aims to be a platform for exchange and an opportunity for the Mediterranean countries to make their voices heard, to review the environmental problems they face and to strengthen implementing a roadmap for adaptation and mitigation of climate change in the Mediterranean. Among the activities scheduled during this important event are Conferences / debates, meetings, Side-Events of partners, workshops related to the objectives of this forum as well as a dedicated area called “Medina solutions ” which will be designed to accommodate the proposals of the representatives of civil society and dealing with environmental and climate change problems.

OME took part to the workgroups of the preparatory stage of the MEDCOP – Climate 2016 which took place on 27 May 2016 in Tangier.  At this occasion, OME conveyed its support to the event and its willingness to actively contribute also with its partners.
